Clarity and resolution

Improve a photo damaged by repeated compression

Look for the original before processing a downloaded chat image. Blocky edges and smeared texture may come from repeated compression, and another edit cannot recover every lost detail.

You choose your own source and review the current cost before generation.

A situation you may recognize

The messaging-app copy is much smaller than the camera original.

Ask for the original file before enhancing the forwarded copy. Compare pixel dimensions rather than attachment size alone. Repeated enhancement cannot reliably recreate lettering or hair detail that compression has already discarded.

01

Locate the problem before editing

Compare fine edges and color transitions. Save the accepted version once and avoid repeatedly sending it through lossy export steps.

IN PRACTICE

Work through a practical example

01

Choose the next move

Recover a better source before increasing output size. Enlarging compression artifacts can make the file bigger without adding trustworthy information.

02

Make the first version

Inspect flat-color areas for square blocks and high-contrast edges for halos. Enhance one candidate, then compare lettering and face details at equal size. Save the approved result once for delivery instead of repeatedly opening and recompressing it through different services.

03

Have these ready

Look for the oldest, least-shared copy first. Avoid using a chat screenshot if the original attachment still exists.

02

Look closely at the examples

Try this before committing

Check whether a camera original or earlier export still exists. Compare it with the chat copy at the same size before processing. If the original already looks better, use it directly rather than spending effort enhancing the degraded copy.

Questions for this project

Is a bigger saved file higher quality?

A less efficient format or lower compression can increase size without restoring detail already lost. Compare the actual pixels and useful features. Keep a high-quality master, but choose delivery format and compression for the destination rather than using megabytes as the quality score.
