Better portrait sources

How to choose between headshot results

First remove results that change your face. Then compare expression, crop and background at the intended display size; the most dramatic image is not always the most usable.

You choose your own source and review the current cost before generation.

01

Choose for the place it will appear

Keep a small shortlist and ask someone who knows you which looks most like you. Inspect that choice closely before downloading the final version.

A situation you may recognize

The most attractive background belongs to the least recognizable portrait.

Hide the backgrounds while comparing the faces, then restore the full frames. Reject likeness failures first and rank the remaining crops for the intended use. This prevents a strong setting from deciding the portrait on its own.

Look closely at the examples

IN PRACTICE

Work through a practical example

01

Have these ready

Place three candidates at equal face size beside the source. Hide style names to reduce the pull of a favorite label.

02

Make the first version

First remove candidates that change facial structure. Next inspect eyes, glasses, collars and background artifacts. Only then compare expression and suitability for the destination. View the finalists both at normal size and inside the actual avatar frame before selecting one master.

03

Choose the next move

If all faces are plausible but none resembles you, change the source. If one face is right but the crop is poor, revise the crop rather than starting over.

Try this before committing

Sort candidates in two passes. First reject identity and anatomy errors without judging style. Then compare the remaining images in the real profile layout. This prevents an attractive backdrop from distracting you from a changed face.

Questions for this project

What order should I use to reject weak candidates?

First reject likeness errors, then unusable crops, then distracting clothing or background. Only compare expression among the remaining options. This prevents an attractive setting from persuading you to accept a face that does not resemble you.

Should I let a colleague choose for me?

A person who knows you can help judge recognizability, but give them the intended use and a short checklist. Ask which looks like you in a meeting, not which looks most glamorous. Keep the final decision with the person represented.
